Air Conditioner Options for Your Garage Conversion

Published on July 06, 2015
Room Conversions Need HVAC.png

So you’re planning on converting your garage into living space as an addition to your house? Many people are doing so as it’s not only a fun and exciting project, but can add a fresh dose of character to your home. Of course a project like this requires thorough preparation. Though we can’t turn you into the ultimate handyman, we can help you be ready to tackle the project by making sure you can weigh all of your garage air conditioner options.

Besides the fun stuff for the game room or man cave you might be building, you need to make sure that you plan for an air conditioner as one of your top priorities. Without it, your new room figures to be a lot less enjoyable to utilize during hot days and nights. There are three options to think about when considering what kind of air conditioner is the best choice for your converted garage.

  1. You can connect an existing air duct from your house to the walls of your garage. This can happen only if the garage and the home are connected and have an easily accessible duct that can be connected to your garage. This is obviously a job for someone with expert knowledge, so consult with a specialist from Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning to find out if this is the right option for you.
  2. Install a ductless air conditioner, also known as a mini-split system. This type of air conditioner runs on its own condenser situated right outside the garage. The indoor AC mounts to the wall near the ceiling. A mini-split system is also a type of packaged HVAC system, which permits you to get an air conditioning system that can handle your heating needs in the cold months as well.
  3. Purchase a window air conditioner. If connecting an existing duct is not a possibility and the room isn’t that big, this could be a a fine choice. However, there are some downsides to a window AC. It is not the most efficient for evenly distributing air, and is not the most efficient for energy usage. If there is not already a window, a window air conditioner will leave a considerable hole in your wall that could look inviting to a determined thief.

If you’re ready to get going on your garage conversion project, make sure your air conditioner needs are properly met. After all, an extension of your house should feel just as comfortable as every other room.
