Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is a wonderful organization that offers financial support to those in the construction field who have life-altering injuries. Every year the Foundation honors various recipients with a grant and in 2016 the Joseph Groh Foundation was excited to announce Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, raised in Pakistan, earned his MBA from the University of Chicago and 13 years ago bought ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and earned his HVAC and general contracting license. Three years ago, Adil experienced a massive stroke at only 48 years old. He lost the ability to use his left arm and it left his left leg majorly impaired, leaving Adil with foot drop. Because he could only walk while using a heavy brace, his muscles began to degenerate and his doctors feared that he would eventually be confined to a wheelchair.

Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their only source of income, resulting in financial strain on the couple with a young child in elementary and three more children in college. They became optimistic when Adil was a good candidate for the WalkAid System, an apparatus that utilizes functional electrical stimulation to help people in Adil’s situation walk again. Unfortunately, Adil and Laila were not able to afford the apparatus in addition to the comprehensive rehab that would be needed so he could understand how to use it.

Luckily, a professional at WalkAid referred Adil and Laila to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the generous grant, Adil got the WalkAid System and has seen great success. His muscle is starting to regenerate and not atrophy, bringing positive thoughts back to Adil and Laila.
